European Democratic Front Charter

At a time when, on the national level, in a context of socio-economical crisis, increasing risks overhang democracy and its values (respect for private life, independence of the judiciary, freedom of thought, …) while on the European level a generalised denial of democracy can be observed as the value of the referenda on European treaties is denied and the will to genuinely associate the 500 millions Europeans to the big decisions of the EU (treaties, enlargement, important choices for society) is missing, urgency arises to gather all forces which, in our 27 countries, want Europe and Democracy to be able to continue to go hand in hand for the next decades.

The European Democratic Front aims to gather, in an efficient and flexible way, the European socio-political forces (associations, citizens movements, political citizens’ initiatives, …) eager to foster the development of democratic practices and institutions in the European Union (including via the new technologies) and which are therefore signatories of the charter of the European Democratic Front.

The European Democratic Front pledges to be a light structure: a charter, an Internet diffusion list gathering the executives of the involved organisations, a name, and a logo.

It is intended to suggest common actions, support the involved organisations in the electoral processes, and to be, in the European Parliament, the name of the parliamentary group which will embody these values. Thereby, any political movement signing the charter pledge to join the European Democratic Front group as soon as constituted in the European Parliament.

The European Democratic Front supports in particular the implementation of three big European democratic reforms:

1.The set-up of trans-European referenda for the ratification of future treaties and enlargements of the EU.

2.The set-up by the 2014 European election of a unique electoral law for the election of the European Parliament, securing the equality of the 500 millions European citizens for this election.

3.The right of initiative for the European Parliament since it is imperative in any democratic system.

The signatories of the European Democratic Front Charter must be the representatives of legally registered organisations in a member state of the European Union.
